Department Website redesign to improve overall look and feel of the site to function as other Weill cornell medicine sites function

Overview
Problem:
Inconsistent styling did not meet brand guidelines
Primary areas of the website do not have prominent callouts on the homepage
Typography, large text blocks, carousel and other features on the site may be detrimental to users with cognitive/visual disabilities
Duplicate and out of date content, Our Physician pages contain content already available on other areas of the Weill Cornell Patient Care website
Design and information architecture do not address way-finding needs for target audience: medical students, clinicians, researchers, and patients.
Solution:
Redesign website and update content to match look and feel of other Weill Cornell Medicine websites.
Improve navigation through website with clear callouts to primary areas, Find a Physician, Education, Fellowships, and Research to improve way-finding for target audience.
Tell story of Neurology Department through enticing visuals and well organized information architecture and design
Research
Information Architecture
Problem:
Complicated main navigation with duplicate content
Titles of primary navigation items are unclear
Solution:
Simplify main navigation by combining pages to reduce taxonomy clutter and eliminate duplicate content
Change names of some primary navigation items to eliminate confusion for the user
Wireframe
Wireframes were designed to provide an overall view of the structure, logic, and functionality of the redesigned website. Wireframes were created for the pages with UI changes. The client reviewed and approved the wireframes prior to the design phase.
Design
Homepage
Problem:
Slideshow takes up valuable real estate
Education content is not highlighted
Metrics on homepage are misleading, when clicked, it leads user to external website.
Newsfeed display does not meet Weill Cornell Medicine standard design
Twitter feed takes up too much space which can be used for other content
Google analytics: over 6,000 visits (top pages) for Education, Patient Care and Research, yet there were no callouts for these top pages on the homepage.
Solution:
Remove photo slideshow and disperse photos throughout the homepage to call attention to other areas of the site
Based on google analytics, create callouts to Education, Residency, Fellowships, Research, Patient Care, About Us, Contact Us, which are highest traffic pages
Clearly indicate that metrics will take user to external websites
Redesign News and Updates section to match Weill Cornell Medicine standards
Structurally revise Twitter feed
Education Page
Problem:
Page layout is sloppy and poorly organized, making it difficult for users to navigate through educational content
Metrics on homepage are misleading, when clicked, it leads user to external website
Duplicate links throughout the Education landing page
Solution:
Create cleaner design; image/context tiles can be utilized on 'Education' landing page to highlight educational content for increased user engagement
Update metrics with clear indication that they will take the user to external pages
Eliminate duplicate links
Continue visual language throughout site; reuse visual elements from homepage on Education page
Residency
Problem:
Accordion interface contains too much information for a single page, causes display issues on both desktop and mobile devices
Accordion interface leads to poor readability and difficult to update content
Solution:
Create callouts and separate pages for content within accordion: move Facilities, Teaching Program, Rotations Schedule, Neurology Sub specialties, Location, Housing and Stipends, Apply to residency program to separate pages.
