Department of Neurology

Department Website redesign to improve overall look and feel of the site to function as other Weill cornell medicine sites function

Role: UX/UI design

Overview

Problem:

  • Inconsistent styling did not meet brand guidelines

  • Primary areas of the website do not have prominent callouts on the homepage

  • Typography, large text blocks, carousel and other features on the site may be detrimental to users with cognitive/visual disabilities

  • Duplicate and out of date content, Our Physician pages contain content already available on other areas of the Weill Cornell Patient Care website

  • Design and information architecture do not address way-finding needs for target audience: medical students, clinicians, researchers, and patients.

Solution:

  • Redesign website and update content to match look and feel of other Weill Cornell Medicine websites.

  • Improve navigation through website with clear callouts to primary areas, Find a Physician, Education, Fellowships, and Research to improve way-finding for target audience.

  • Tell story of Neurology Department through enticing visuals and well organized information architecture and design

Design

Homepage

Neurology Homepage.png

Problem:

  • Slideshow takes up valuable real estate

  • Education content is not highlighted

  • Metrics on homepage are misleading, when clicked, it leads user to external website.

  • Newsfeed display does not meet Weill Cornell Medicine standard design

  • Twitter feed takes up too much space which can be used for other content

  • Google analytics: over 6,000 visits (top pages) for Education, Patient Care and Research, yet there were no callouts for these top pages on the homepage.

Solution:

  • Remove photo slideshow and disperse photos throughout the homepage to call attention to other areas of the site

  • Based on google analytics, create callouts to Education, Residency, Fellowships, Research, Patient Care, About Us, Contact Us, which are highest traffic pages

  • Clearly indicate that metrics will take user to external websites

  • Redesign News and Updates section to match Weill Cornell Medicine standards

  • Structurally revise Twitter feed

Education Page

Problem:

  • Page layout is sloppy and poorly organized, making it difficult for users to navigate through educational content

  • Metrics on homepage are misleading, when clicked, it leads user to external website

  • Duplicate links throughout the Education landing page

Solution:

  • Create cleaner design; image/context tiles can be utilized on 'Education' landing page to highlight educational content for increased user engagement

  • Update metrics with clear indication that they will take the user to external pages

  • Eliminate duplicate links

  • Continue visual language throughout site; reuse visual elements from homepage on Education page

Residency

Problem:

  • Accordion interface contains too much information for a single page, causes display issues on both desktop and mobile devices

  • Accordion interface leads to poor readability and difficult to update content

Solution:

  • Create callouts and separate pages for content within accordion: move Facilities, Teaching Program, Rotations Schedule, Neurology Sub specialties, Location, Housing and Stipends, Apply to residency program to separate pages.
